Kate, William and George land in Wellington to start their 3-week tour (updated)

Prince William and Kate Middleton, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have officially landed in New Zealand—along with their son, Prince George—to start their three week tour of NZ and Australia.  They landed in Sydney first; then took a plane to Wellington.  They then went to the Government House for a ceremonial welcome including a Maori Powhiri and a 21 gun salute. Kate meeting the Governor-General and his wife; Kate greeting the Maori with a traditional greeting, called a Hongi; Kate meeting the Maori performers. UPDATE: Here is an article about the Maori greeting and dance, with a lot of nice pictures. It mentions Kate giggling when she met the Maori men who were wearing their traditional garb. I don’t know if she actually giggled or not as I have not seen a video. I have now seen a video and I don’t think she was “giggling” as the article would have us believe. It seemed more to me that she was smiling and laughing at what the man was saying, rather than giggling because she was embarrassed or something. /UPDATE

Princess Charlene attends charity ball with Prince Albert, other Monaco royals

This is my first Princess Charlene post.  Here we go.  Princess Charlene of Monaco attended the annual Rose Ball in Monte Carlo on Saturday.  The Rose Ball, or Bal de la Rose, is a charity fundraiser event in aid of the Princess Grace Foundation.  The foundation supports emerging talent in theatre, dance, and film by awarding scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships.  The foundation was established in 1982 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, following Princess Grace (nee Grace Kelly)’s death that year.

Kate, William and Harry attend society wedding

The Royal Holy Trinity was out and about today.  Prince William, Prince Harry, and Kate Middleton attended the society wedding of Lucy Meade and Charlie Budgett at St. Mary’s Church in Marshfield, Gloucestersire.

Considering it was Lucy’s day, I’m going to talk about the bride first.  Lucy looked lovely.  I love the lace detail around the shoulders.  Lucy wore a little tiara.  It’s cute, but not overwhelming.  It fits.

Kate wore her blue Missoni tweed coat she’s worn a few times now.  She first wore this coat in March 2012 on a trip to Fortnum and Mason’s with the Queen and Camilla—this was the “can you smell tea by smelling it” trip.  Kate then repeated the coat for a trip to Nottingham in June 2012, again with the Queen, but with William instead of Camilla.  For the wedding, under the coat Kate wore a Whistles dress she previously wore to the Jubliee concert and the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex gets emotional during visit to hospital that saved her life during birth of Lady Louise

The Countess of Wessex has been getting a lot of coverage lately—which is awesome.  Yesterday, Sophie visited Frimley Park Hospital where she nearly died giving birth to Lady Louise in 2003.  Sophie suffered a placental abruption at 36 weeks which caused her to lose a lot of blood.  Marcus Setchell delivered her via an emergency cesarean one month early.  Lady Louise was taken to St George’s Hospital’s neonatal unit in London for two weeks.

Sophie was at the hospital to open the new neonatal unit.  It was the first time she had been back since she gave birth to her son, James, Viscount Severn, in 2007.  The unit was funded by the Frimley Park Hospital Charity’s Saving Tiny Lives Appeal.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, shows off her hockey prowess

The Countess of Wessex was out and about yesterday (March 11), visiting the England hockey team at Bisham Abbey National Sports Center in her role as Patron of England Hockey—she’s been patron since January 2007.  Sophie talked to the staff and players and got in on the action by playing a bit with player Shona McCallin.  From the pictures, Sophie seemed to really be enjoying herself, which is great to see.  She was presented with an England Hockey jersey.

The men and women’s England hockey teams will compete in the Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands in June and in the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in August.

Kate wears Queen’s necklace to National Portrait Gallery Gala (update)

Kate attended the Portrait Gala 2014 at the National Portrait Gallery in London today—wearing a necklace loaned to her by the Queen (I’ll get to that in a moment).  Kate is the patron of the museum.  The gala was a fundraising event to showcase Pen Portraits and Mystery Portrait Postcards created by a number of artists, authors and well-known individuals who have been inspired by portraits in the collection.  Apparently the portraits will be sold, with the proceeds going to fund “the Gallery’s work of delivering inspirational exhibitions and displays, offering unique learning opportunities and undertaking world class research.”

Is the palace hoping Kate in couture and tiaras will make an impression in Oz and change her image?

There is a new article in the Daily Mail about Kate and her Oz tour wardrobe, and my if it isn’t hilarious.  It’s hilarious in how interesting and telling it is.  It references Diana—a lot—and talks about Kate’s wardrobe and stylists and all that, and is very telling I think.  Hm… how best to do this… I think I’ll bullet point quotes, then give my thoughts on the quote, and then summarize after.
