A critical blog about Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, and the rest of the British royal family
The Royal Windsor Horse Show took place this past weekend, and the Queen, the Wessexes, and Anne’s kids all turned up for the event.
Following the big tiara-filled gala dinner on May 9, the royals came out for Day 2 of the 80th Birthday celebrations of King Harald and Queen Sonja, which was a government-hosted black tie dinner at the Opera House in Oslo. It was rainy and wet so the royals had to cover up with umbrellas and outerwear.
Last night, May 9, King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway held a joint 80th birthday dinner at the Royal Palace in Oslo – their birthdays are February 21 (for Harald) and July 4 (for Sonja). A truck load of Norwegian and foreign royals attended including crowd favorites Crown Princess Victoria, Queen Maxima, and The Countess of Wessex.
Prince William and Kate Middleton made their very first appearance with the Queen and other members of the British Royal Family for Easter service at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle yesterday, April 16. I’m also including the Spanish royals attending Easter Mass.
Sophie, Countess of Wessex stepped out for a charity lunch for one of her patronages yesterday, while Queen Maxima donned a tiara and a necklace not seen since the 1970s for a State Visit from Argentina.
Kate Middleton and Prince William, along with Prince Harry, joined The Queen, Prince Philip, and other members of the royal family yesterday, March 9, for a Service of Dedication at Horse Guards Parade to honor the men and women who served during the Gulf War and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Queen then unveiled the memorial while the rest of the family attended a reception.
Every once in a while, I’ll get a comment questioning why I still call the Duchess of Cambridge “Kate Middleton” even though she hasn’t been “Kate Middleton” since April 29, 2011. I’ve explained it in the comment section before, but since the subject was brought up again recently I thought I’d take a more in-depth look at the topic for a couple of reasons: 1) So I have something easy to point to if the question ever arises again; 2) Because every few months since I started calling Sofia Hellqvist “Princess Sofia” I’ve been questioning why it was so easy for me to switch names for her but not for Catherine; 3) I’ve been thinking about writing a titles clarification post for a couple months since I saw a comment on another site complaining about the way people write certain royals’ names; 4) I recently read an article trying to explain why people still call Catherine “Kate Middleton” and think their reasoning was incorrect (at least for me). So I thought I’d kill fours birds with one article and write up my personal thoughts on the subject.
In this royal round up, I’ve got an appearances update from Kate Middleton and Prince Harry, Sophie, Countess of Wessex being adorable with some kids, New Years courts from Queen Letizia and Crown Princess Mary, and some cute photos that Princess Madeleine shared.
As this is a Kate-centric blog, I will have polls for all of Kate’s clothing choices this year, but first I want to highlight some of my favorite fashion moments from some other royal ladies.
