King and Queen of Bhutan release first photo of their new son

This is the second of two quick updates for today (go here to read about William and Kate’s new scheduled appearance). King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema of Bhutan released the first photo of their new son to celebrate the Losar.

King and Queen of Bhutan first baby photo
[The baby with King Jigme, the King’s father, and Queen Jetsun]

They posted the photo to Facebook with the message:

“❦ Bhutanese families spent a wonderful Losar today, celebrating the day with family and loved ones. To make the day even more special, we have the honour of bringing to you the very first official photograph of His Royal Highness The Gyalsey.
“In this delightful Losar Kupar from Lingkana Palace, His Royal Highness The Gyalsey is surrounded by His Majesty The King, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen.
“His Royal HIghness The Gyalsey was born on the 5th of February 2016, and is the first Royal Child of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen. ❦”

As far as I am aware, the baby does not have a name yet. The Gyalsey, I believe, is a title, though I’ve seen people writing about the baby as if it’s his name. King Jigme Khesar (name) is called Druk Gyalpo (title, meaning Dragon King); Queen Jetsun (name) is called Druk Gyaltsuen (title, meaning Dragon Queen). So Unnamed Baby is called The Gyalsey which means Prince (I think).

As far as the photo goes, it’s kind of a bummer that we didn’t get to see the baby’s face, but it’s a lovely family photo. So much color!

I am really looking forward to the two babies in the next couple of months. Princess Madeleine gave us royal baby watchers great photos of her son. I still love his grey knitted outfit. I hope Victoria and Sofia have the same excellent taste with newborn outfits.

It will be nice to learn if there will be two boys, two girls or one of each for the SRF. With the children being close in age it would be wonderful if they became friends as well as cousins.

I’m sure Sylvia is going to be in grandma heaven by the time her 40th wedding anniversary rolls around in June. 3 healthy and happily married adult children plus 4 healthy and happy grandbabies? She is so blessed and whenever I see photos of her with the babies, she’s reminded of just that.

      I so agree Kath.
I will be looking forward to seeing photos of the baby as he grows up.
Thanks for the post KMR, there is something about this family that makes me smile. Bhutan is a beautiful country and Will and Kate are very lucky to be going there.

I am not even going to comment on your other post today it will just wind me up.
This is a beautiful colourful family photo with such love on all the faces. They all look calm and happy and this is so much better than standing on the hospital steps looking stressed.
I wonder if we don’t see the baby’s face until he has been named or something? The King is himself a talented photographer so this is clearly deliberate not an error.

This photo kind of reminds me of George’s first baby photos (except WAY better) in that we didn’t get a good look at his face. I hope we get to see this baby’s face soon, and learn the name.

The Northern Bhutanese do not have such traditions. The article has several things that have nothing to do with the dominant population. Such as the quote :”Older women wear the Nepalese style sari and men wear the daura suruwal.”

Bhutanese women wear Kira like Jetsun Pema (ankle length dress). Men wear Gho like the King (knee length dress).

The article mentions Hinduism which is a regional religion in Bhutan.
According to the constitution of Bhutan: “Buddhism is the spiritual heritage of Bhutan, which promotes
the principles and values of peace, non-violence, compassion
          and tolerance.”

“The Druk Gyalpo is the protector of all religions in Bhutan”

Aww, they’re hugging over their bundle of joy. What a sweet picture. They muist be over the moon. They’re also honouring proud (and young if I may add) grandpa who’s holding the baby. Wonder too when we can get to see the little guy’s face although I don’t know if this complies with their culture.

I also wonder from the picture if there is a patriarchal hint. Anyway, I genuinely wish health and happiness for the dragon prince and the best for the rest of the family. These posts make us happy, KMR!

Birdy, thank you so much for the article. The father was only 24 when Jigme was born! He looks more like an older brother than a father.

Thanks Birdy, for sharing such an interesting article. I love how the King spoke about his position as King “Throughout my reign I will never rule you as a king. I will protect you as a parent, care for you as a brother, and serve you as a son. I shall give you everything and keep nothing.” so very similar to Queen Elizabeth’s speech on her 21st birthday when she devoted her life to her people. It’s such a shame to no longer see that depth of devotion, duty and service to others.

Thank you, BIrdy. And, Lauri, I agree with what you said. Devotion, duty and service to others. Quite a wonderful concept. I wonder how W feels about that?

I agree with everyone else. The photo is so special. How proud and brimming with love everyone seems. A baby who is truly special. May he have a happy and healthy life. One in which devotion, duty and service to others is evident. One in which love and beauty — as well as good health — prevail.

Onward to the Swedish Royal Babies. We eagerly await their arrivals, too.

Very sweet photo! It’s so nice to see the King’s fathers arm around Jetsun, especially for a culture that is not used to pda’s. I wonder if the baby already has a full head of hair?

Yes, Gyalsey also romanized as Gyalse or rGyalsras (due to Bhutanese pronunciation not having English sounds) it means prince but can also mean a Bodhisattva. According to the Tibetan Dictionary, it has several definitions.
Based on the fact that monarchies are religious, it is not surprising that some of these definitions are religious.
