Prince William and The Duchess of Cambridge were in Wales today, August 5, for a couple of engagements. They first visited Barry Island to speak with local business owners before heading to Cardiff for a visit to a care home.

Embed from Getty ImagesWilliam and Kate first visited an arcade, which is a filming location for Gavin and Stacey (a TV show), where they played one of the claw games and did the ball one (I haven’t been to an arcade in years, I have no idea what the games are called). There were also kids there.

After the arcade, William and Kate visited Marco’s Cafe, which is also part of Gavin and Stacey. It was a very Gavin and Stacey heavy part of the day. The morning’s engagements were embargoed to avoid crowds gathering, but gather they did. Outside the cafe, William and Kate stopped to speak with the crowd although they didn’t shake hands with anyone as far as I can tell. Rebecca English has a video of the crowd that formed outside the cafe.
Embed from Getty ImagesThings may be completely different in Wales and in the UK as a whole, but I’m in the US and COVID cases are rising and people are protesting having to practice basic human decency, so seeing William and Kate not wearing masks, promoting going to arcades and hanging out and touching stuff, and seeing the crowds gathering without masks, it freaks me out. I know the crowd wasn’t William and Kate’s fault, but still.

Embed from Getty ImagesThe afternoon saw William and Kate visit Shire Hall Care Home – this time in masks – where they met the staff and residents outside in the garden (it’s a nice garden).
I didn’t cover the Cambridges’ virtual bingo game earlier this year, but the residents from Shire Hall were a part of that. One resident, Joan Drew Smith, 87, had some thoughts.
William: We did the bingo with you… You won… You said we didn’t do a very good job.
Joan: No, you did a bloody shitty job.
That conversation starts at 2:50 in the video below. That interaction was quite amusing.
For the day’s engagements, Kate brought back her Emilia Wickstead “Aurora” dress ($2,255) which she debuted last September at her Back to Nature Wisley launch. This dress was my 4th Worst outfit Kate wore in 2019, so I’m obviously super pumped that it made a repeat appearance.

Embed from Getty ImagesThe earrings are also new, from a small Welsh designer, the Spells of Love “Alia Hoops” (£62.00). The earrings aren’t my personal taste, but I like that Kate is supporting an indie brand.
For the first stop, neither Kate nor William wore a mask, but for the second visit Kate brought back her Amaia mask (£15) from yesterday.
