Kate joins HM & Charles for Festival of Remembrance

The Festival of Remembrance was held last night, November 11, at the Royal Albert Hall. Kate Middleton joined Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles, among other royals, for the event.

This year’s Festival of Remembrance covered Passchendaele, the London Bridge attacks, and 100 years of women in the Armed Forces, and featured performances from The Massed Bands of the Guards Division, The Countess of Wessex’s String Orchestra, the String Ensemble of the Royal Marines Band Service, and the Royal Air Force Salon Orchestra, among others.

Melanie C performed ‘You raise me up’ while 100 women entered the hall for Women at War 100. The 100th anniversary of Women at War featured Joan Picton, who read the citation, with Squadron leader Gemma Lonsdale and Lieutenant Colonel Lucy Giles.

The Band of the Royal Bands performed as the Drumhead Altar was set up and Lieutenant Pete Bryan placed the Book of Remembrance atop the Altar. Then, the Royal British Legion President, Air Marshal David Walker, gave the exhortation: “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.”

Kate debuted yet another black coat, because one can never have enough basic black coats, amirite. This one is by Catherine Walker and it’s a bespoke version of the velvet “Caressa Jacket”. Kate’s love of buttons is on full display with this one.

Kate wore Princess Diana’s Collingwood Pearl Earrings again, and carried her black Magid clutch. She’s also wearing a black dress underneath the coat, and black suede pumps. Kate wore a big poppy pin as well.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall were in attendance, having just gotten back from a tour of Singapore, Malaysia, and India.

Kate was seated beside Prince Andrew. Prince William attended a rugby game in Wales earlier in the day, but couldn’t (?) make it back in time for this event. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were seated in the row behind Kate and Andrew.

Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex also attended.

Also in attendance were Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence (who were in Belgium earlier in the day yet somehow could make it back to London for this event, but William couldn’t make it back from Wales?), the Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra.

Oh I am so glad Kate had a new bespoke black coat made for her! The poor thing doesn’t have enough choices between the 15 that she owns. So I am glad she had a new one specially made for her :P. Any event is just an excuse for her to buy new clothes. I hope she at least doesn’t wear something new tomorrow.

Also, where was Camilla’s poppy? Was it on her dress?

And William is just ridiculous! I am glad his wife at least came, but as the future King, he really should have been there. I have read other’s excuses for him (on other sites) and I just don’t think there is really any valid excuse for him missing tonight.

I knew “someone” was going to say that. But she isn’t that far along; some of her black coats aren’t that tight; and also coats are easy to let out (she has done it before). She clearly just wanted to buy another new black coat. If she wears a old coat tomorrow, it will prove her coats still fit

She also has a black coat from 2014 when pregnant with Charlotte she could wear. She’s not that much farther along in this pregnancy than she was with Charlotte for Remembrance Day 2014.

Totally agree Overit, I’m cross with her for being so profligate and cross with the other sites praising her for being so brave and looking so beautiful in her new coat and ridiculous ‘look at me’ poppy.
And yes, where was Camilla’s poppy?
This is not Kate’s event , absolutely no excuse for a new coat.

The whole evening was as ever beautifully done and very poignant.

I’d assume Camilla’s was under the jacket she wore when she came in. Can’t see her not wearing one.

Why the heck is Kate wearing that huge poppy. It’s sort of garish and look at me. Just like the new coat.

And she seems to have worn another new black coat today with rows and rows of buttons. Such waste.

Also she needs to work on her serious face because she looks petulant in some of these photos. She did the same when she was at the sports thing with Harry and William last week. None were posing, but she was the only one with a pouty and bored look on her face.

Shopping seems to be an addiction. Do the UK papers not comment on new outfits at almost every sighting? Or are they that weak?

I agree with your comment re. the bored/petulant looks – the photo with Andrew is a good example captured by the camera many times before. Rather imperious. These occasions are serious – no hair twirling required – but being warm and engaged is the main attribute, I’d think.

If a woman is completely financially dependent on her husband, as in she makes no money of her own and any money she spends was made by her husband, then it would be her husband’s business how she spends that money. Likewise, Kate is completely financially dependent on the public, as in she makes no money of her own and any money she spends comes from the taxpayer, therefore it is the public’s business how she spends that money. I assume the money you spend is your own, which means it’s no one’s business how you spend your money. You’re saying that as a royal, Kate doesn’t repeat clothes like us, but then you also cannot say that Kate can spend however much money she wants like you do because ‘freedom’ when Kate is not in the same ‘freedom’ boat as you are when it comes to spending money.

As the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate and other members of the royal family are representatives of the United Kingdom. They are ‘on show’ to the world every time they attend a public function. If Kate chooses to spend her stipend on clothes that is her perogative. Her appearances generate huge social and economic benefits to the United Kingdom. Given that the value of the monarchy to the British economy was estimated at £56.7 billion (2015) it makes complaints about the cost of her clothing rather pathetic and small minded.

        • Nic919
          November 12, 2017 at 11:28 pm (1 week ago)

She has spent over 200k every year which is wasteful. This along with all the other expenses used to support her alone not including her kids actually cuts into the UK budget. The numbers are never fully disclosed because if the general public knew the actual amount spent on the Windsors then calls for a republic would increase exponentially. There are already cuts in benefits for those who have more than two kids, but not for Kate. These women have to prove they were raped in order to get child care benefits. But yes let’s pay for another black dress for Kate.

The number you are quoting is in fact completely inaccurate because it includes the valuation of the Crown Estate and the Duchies, which are managed in care of the British people and not property directly owned by anyone in the BRF. The study also added in numbers for unproven nonsense like the Kate effect and the Charlotte effect and the George effect, all of which is based on nothing legitimate.

I could then easily refer to another study which states that adding in the costs of the security for all the members of the BRF and expenses, in fact the British taxpayers experience a loss of 334 million per year to keep the Windsors living in style.

The Queen is the head of state and represents the UK at functions. Her offspring and in laws do not need to show up in different designer attire every time they leave their palaces.

It actually doesn’t matter whose money it is. Her husband has just had a go at people about consumerism and overpopulation, like charity these things start at home. Practise what you preach etc.

If we didn’t have a monarchy would tourists stop coming? Because they still come in droves to visit Shakespeare’s various houses? The palaces would actually generate more money because they could be open all year. The art and jewels could be on display….I could go on.

Dear Spectator, I suppose you reference, rather eloquently, the Brand Finance evaluation. The huge impact of the BRF on tourism is one of the greatest myths and if I read it correctly that is the biggest pull the BRF is supposed to have economically. May I bring Versailles to your attention, undoubtedly a great tourist attraction even without a Royal Family.

Spectator I didn’t note a reference to the “complex mathematical economic modeling” regarding the BRF impact on the British economy. Would you please provide it so that I may dispute what you are referencing?I’m going to guess that it’s right below the “trickle down economics” that the elite in America use to justify their tax cuts on the backs of the poor & middle class in America. We all know that the royal family is not the tourist attractions, but their palaces are and that’s why people come to visit England. I will check back this evening to read what you have posted.

Spectator: this is not true at all. You are regurgitating establishment PR talking points regarding their value to the economy that are used to gaslight the punlic into accepting the royals’ abuse of taxpayer funds.

Any modeling of their value usually includes state owned assets that are held in trust by the royals and obsfucates as if those assets depend on presence of the royals.

Fact: the most profitable, most visited royal sights around the world are not in Britain. This inconvenient fact is borne out in visitor numbers and revenue not a hypothetical model.

Fact: the only royal connected tourist attaction in Britain is the Tower of London and adjacent tower bridge by default. Local and national UK tourist boards regularly survey tourists to London and that is the only site that scores consistently.

None of the British palaces score in the world’s top 10 visited Palaces.

And of course what royals live in the Tower!!! And the Tower is open something like 364 days a year not just during the summer.

And the stats never include the cost of the security. Now any HOS has security, but not their grandsons at taxpayer expense, or greatgrandkids. The German HOS doesn’t send his grandchildren off all over the place at taxpayer expense.

Smoke and mirrors. But people are often taken in, how many times have we heard the Duchies are ‘private ‘ wealth and Charles is personally financing Kate’s coat and Kiki fettishes?
For the record I have a shoe fettish . My friends and sons laugh at me, BUT I work and pay for my shoes from my own hard earned after full tax paid income. That is a concept Kate simply would not understand.

No royals don’t repeat clothes as much as we do but many of them work a lot more than Kate and repeat their clothes much more often than Kate. As a start, check out Princess Anne who has been known to re-wear outfits often and once said: ‘A good suit goes on for ever. If it is properly made and has a classic look, you can wear it ad infinitum. The economy was bred into me. My parents believe that things are not to be wasted. That lesson does last.’

It is a long bow to draw that the NHS is struggling due to the royal family. Reduced levels of funding to health, education and welfare systems is not a problem atypical of the United Kingdom but is a problem faced by most first world economies (with or without a monarchy). These are more structural issues related to factors such as huge increases in cost providing services; ageing population; outdated infrastructure; the huge cost of modern technology to support systems, and reduced tax revenue. At least countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia and Sweden have universal health care systems, for which we should be profoundly grateful.

          • Birdy
            November 13, 2017 at 4:24 pm (1 week ago)

The NHS is amazing but it needs more money. The profligacy of the BRF doesn’t sit well, with many of the financial struggles in the U.K. When has Charles waited 5-6 hours in A&E? Or waited months for an appointment with a consultant ? They have no idea at all about the real world . Of course abolishing the monarchy wouldn’t solve the issues with NHS funding but Spectator it’s the optics. They have no idea of the harsh realities of life in the UK , they have never struggled financially for anything, yet very many of them have equally never worked hard…as in all day, every day for 48 weeks of the year. Optics….and please don’t lecture me as if I am a brainless person who gets her information from the tabloids. My tabloid of choice is the weekend FT. From what I can gather virtually every KMR regular is highly educated, knowledgable and engaged.

I agree. Waiting “five to six hours” is not ideal. However, let us put this into perspective. At least we have access to a universal health care system. Millions of people worldwide either cannot access effective medical treatment, or the quality of their treatment is directly related to their ability to pay.

I will have to think more for more examples. However off the top of my head she has worn several repeat outfits at the Queen’s Garden Party. The queen repeats a lot of outfits herself so it would be odd if she wasn’t okay with others doing the same.

Kate repeated her 2013 diplomatic reception gown to the 2015 diplomatic reception. Kate repeated her China State Banquet gown to the 2016 diplomatic reception. Both of those repeats were in the presence of the Queen. Kate repeated a 2011 or 2012 coat to the Festival of Remembrance last year in the Queen’s presence. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Okay. I still think there is a pattern. Like she has a specific wardrobe for “court” duties with the queen. Might be worth a look in a quiet moment.

I don’t think the argument that Princess Anne repeats holds up. Anne is 32 years older then Kate and has had time to build her wardrobe. Kate has only been on the royal circuit for 6 years and hasn’t been to nearly enough engagements to build a sizeable wardrobe like Anne has.

I would put very large sums of money on Kate having a much larger wardrobe than Anne, who has always been careful. She restyles things and reengineers. Kate wears a D&G while pregnant so I suspect we will never see it again. Waste of taxpayer money.

And all this nonsense ( generally not you LBR) about it being Charles’ money/ decision. It is taxpayer money.

Carole won’t be around for ever. And, if William finds a woman he really wants, a divorce won’t be a problem, I am sure.

William may have been scarred by his parents’ divorce, but when/if he meets the person he thinks he was meant to be with, divorce won’t seem quite so terrible.

Sad that there are children involved. Yes, W and K may lead separate lives and may be doing so now, but when one or both find true happiness, trust me, divorce won’t be out of the question. Not if the future King wants it. And, I am sure Kate will be well taken care of.

If the monarchy hasn’t crumbled by the time it gets to William, I don’t think he will hesitate to get a divorce if he wants to.
I don’t see Kate initiating it, but I certainly see him doing that.
He’s not really acting like he cares about her that much as it is. And I don’t care that they have known each other for years. At this point there should be respect provided and he does not do that.
Charles certainly doesn’t treat Camilla that way and even with Diana you couldn’t say he was rude to her, although the body language did get really bad prior to the separation. But that seemed to be mutual.

I’m usually annoyed at Kate’s profligacy but gosh I’m a sucker for a black velvet coat, and this is a really nice one. Besides, she was here, appropriately addressed, here, suitable behaved, and, you know, here, *ahem*, William.

    November 12, 2017 at 6:16 am (1 week ago)

I think Kate looks nice, I prefer this over last year’s coat. And, yes, she has a lot of coats, but I actually don’t mind her debuting a few new ones yearly (meaning 3 not 10), as long as she’s appropriately dressed for the occasion and out and about. For example, a new coat for a tour by a designer of the country, a new coat for Remembrance, and a new coat for a holiday (like Christmas or St. Patricks). I know William probably thinks he’s working and his family doesn’t need to all be at the same place at the same time, but the optics of this are terrible for him. How many rugby games occur? Surely, he could have been with Kate tonight, and more importantly, showing some king-like solemnity for the fallen. I think he’ll be there today, but it still comes across as he doesn’t take his role seriously enough, and it’s a shame.

      November 12, 2017 at 4:13 pm (1 week ago)

But just how many black coats does she need, given the royals tend not to wear black except for mourning or Remembrance weekend? A new coat every year worn just once….or goodness me maybe twice?

      • Leah
        November 12, 2017 at 5:12 pm (1 week ago)

Kate wears black a lot. When Diana wore that black Emmanuel gown on her first official outing with Charles, it caused a stir and broke serious protocol, because back then, royals really didn’t wear black. But I am pretty sure that rule has been relaxed. Look at all the black evening gowns Waity has worn.

        • Birdy
          November 12, 2017 at 5:19 pm (1 week ago)

But not coats. And the rule has not been changed she just can’t be bothered to follow it.

Oh well can’t be bothered any more, she is profligate and won’t venture out without a new outfit and some, especially non UK taxpayers, thinks that’s fine.

I don’t so if I do ever get a vote I will vote republican ( please note not Trump) .

I think I prefer this black coat to the coat worn at the cenotaph. The gold buttons look a bit out of place and the black buttons more dignified for the occasion. I do like the hat but it reminds me of the hat worn at William’s passing out ceremony. PS A friend from school was at the rugby in Cardiff on Saturday. I didn’t connect the two until now. William probably stayed at the mess in St Athan. It is half Army, half RAF.

Kate is aging so quickly these past two years. She looks hollow compared to her 2011-2014 days. And today, the circles around her eyes, aging lines, and exhaustion honestly shows and leads me to believe that she must be grappling with SOME sort of illness. She flat out looks tired.

      November 12, 2017 at 8:43 am (1 week ago)

It also could be something psychological. If people don’t feel well with themselves, it shows in their faces.
I think she is a little bit overwhelmed by everything.William is not like her father, he doesn’t listen to everything his wife says, so it seems.
She is much more a family person than William. Imagine yourself in her shoes.
She put everthing into this marriage, she didn’t care for a career or anything else, just William.
If William would be cruel, it would be easy to break Kate.In this, I feel sorry for her.

Also, in pregancies you need much more cuddling.Hormones are different.
All speculations, of course. But I think it has some truth in it.She is also just an human being and likely to feel not that well, by the look of it.

        November 12, 2017 at 10:13 am (1 week ago)

With Catherine Quinn on board now, Kate is probably having to put in more time and effort into her “working” role than she ever has before for any other job, and that, plus being pregnant, is probably wearing her out. She’d never make it in the real world.

And Kate is definitely her father’s daughter, in so many ways but obviously in the prematurely gray hair, the jowliness, the dark circles, etc. No wonder she’s reportedly going to the hair salon three times a week–those kinky, coarse grays are getting harder and harder to disguise. She seems to be aging much faster than William now, and that must be very depressing.

        • Nic919
          November 12, 2017 at 11:10 am (1 week ago)

Even if all her hair is grey, going three times a week is ridiculous. You get the hair dyed and then show up for touch ups at the roots, which maybe gets done once a week? Since Kate doesn’t actually show her face in public more than once or twice then no one would even see her roots.
And she has a hairdresser who could do touch ups at KP.

        • Sarah
          November 12, 2017 at 1:16 pm (1 week ago)

I wonder what she’s actually getting done 3x a wk? I mean, you can only dye, condition, blow out so many times! Especially if she has extensions in. Her hair looks better than in the past
Maybe they’re giving her stylist tips on more fashionable updos 😉

          • Lizzie
            November 12, 2017 at 6:10 pm (1 week ago)

Oh, in addition to dying and touch ups, there are keratin treatments, deep conditioning, etc. Keeping aging hair looking healthy and youthful is very time consuming as well as expensive. But I totally agree that three times a week is beyond ridiculous.

I think Kate has never liked KP–she’s not used to constantly being surrounded with such a large household staff and it’s all too easy for “work” to find her there. So perhaps the frequent salon visits (rather than having it done at KP) are her escape–She can sit and relax for hours with no intrusion from the kiddies, Catherine Quinn, housekeeper, etc. Just be a pampered princess.

I️ definitely believe the nannies are there to take care of the kids. She’s been aging rapidly for the past year now; aging isn’t anything bad per say, but it’s jarring comparing her 2015 self to her 2017 self. Marked difference, which is only becoming more obvious this past month. I️ believe she has some form of HG, honestly.

Where was Harry? I don’t think he has attended in the past but given his involvement in the IG, I thought this would be something he would want to attend.

I also wanted to say that I am happy to see more family jewels being worn. They have so many nice things stashed away, I would like them used rather than buying new, cheaper stuff.

And now I am going to contradict myself. Maybe we should praise Kate’s dedication to keeping the retail fashion industry afloat through her massive continuing donations. Let’s pretend it’s her secret charity and we will all be much happier with her.

I think everyone looked nice. Kate coat is nice. I’m just not fan of the button. I really appreciate and respect that the fact that Festival of Remembrance is still observed in such high regard. As it should be. As for Billy Boy not attending. That is just unacceptable in my opinion. Your father and step mother just returned from a tour. They could make it though. Your aunt was in Belgium earlier in the day. Yet she could make it. Your ninety six year old grandfather was there. As well as your grandmother. And your pregnant wife. Yet your no where to be found. A future King of England cannot make an appearance at one of the most important and solemn engagements of the year? I just hope this man child can get his head out of his ass. And realize he needs to show up. I hope he wasn’t out clubbing and doing his Daddy Dance again.

I rather liked Kate’s outfit this evening. I’m glad to see that she wore black tights tonight, they look much better with the black coat/dress then the nude tights she’s worn in the past. Imho, the black tights make this outfit look more “put together”, which is something Kate has struggled with in the past.

I’m liking this shorter cut but I really wish she would adopt a sleeker look, ala CP Mary, rather than keeping the bouncy curls as every cut needs to be styled differently. I’d also like to see her try an off-center part, I think it would soften her look.

The faux bob she has at today’s cenotaph ceremony is actually nice. She really should try a much shorter hairstyle at least once, because with three young kids she really shouldn’t be keeping hair that requires elaborate styling. And she rarely has it styled in a way that looks professional. It almost always looks like she is trying to recapture her 20s.

Meghan coming into the picture will make her bad style look more obvious. Meghan always has hair on point. It is long but always styled in a way that works and isn’t the undergrad girl look.

Oooh, I disagree about the faux bob. It tops my what in the name of…? list with some of her odd bun do’s that resemble pastries or when her hair is pulled back but styled to cover her ears like a speed skater hood.

I also liked her total look this morning. Very professional look!
As for ” another new coat” I would imagine Prince Charles gives her a clothing budget and she has to stay within it. And if another new coat can be purchased within that budget, so be it. I highly doubt he just lets her spend to her heart’s content. I’m sure she chooses what she buys while staying within guidelines.

            November 12, 2017 at 3:57 pm (1 week ago)

I highly doubt Kate has a budget. Mostly because the finances of the BRF are a mysterious black hole and they only pay things like taxes when they must.
She has spent over 200k annually the past two years and will likely match that this year. If she doesn’t have a pregnancy coat from that amount, considering she has been pregnant twice already then she is a complete fool.

        November 12, 2017 at 9:07 pm (1 week ago)

Kate has a ton of extensions and wiglets. All she does to change up her hairstyles is insert different lengths of extensions. A lot was said about her *short* haircut she debuted at Wimbledon, but on close observation it was just a changeup of the hairpieces, et al. Hair does not grow that fast and full in just a few months. The bump at the crown of her head is a wiglet and is now a permanent fixture which causes the part in the front to look out of place.

I recently watched a documentary on K&W’s wedding, and the commentator, a guy, stated that Kate was told by BP to wear her hair up for the wedding, but elected to do otherwise. The commentator stated that the fullness we are seeing is due to Kaity adding in extensions and hairpieces. I have difficulty complimenting people for their hair looking good when I know that most of the hair is not their own.

As for Kate, I love velvet outfits but the buttons on this ruin it for me. It’s a shame you can’t see her sparkly earrings with her hair down. I’m actually surprised she came sans William. So it was okay for William to fly back and forth for his polo game/time at horse show thing last year yet he can’t make it back from rugby game for this? Kate looks fine and is dressed appropriately but I do wish she could manufacture a look of gravity. All we get is bored, not real solemnity. I think this would help her in her work overall. She (and William) seem unable to act (or be) grave or serious without it being overtly false.

An almost 36 year old woman can’t create facial expressions that are somber?!? When she’s tries for somber, she looks bored and tired. Hey at least gotta be grateful that she isn’t flashing at a cenotaph or twirling her hair and smiling, like she did in the past at events honouring the war dead. Arrogant madam is merely looking bored this time!

She looks awful btw: grumpy, frumpy, no charisma or style to her. And considering that she barely lifts a finger at home or outside and has nannies to raise her kids, why does she look so tired? Come on, an unlimited clothing and housing budget isn’t enough to bring some light to her face? Or did she have to miss her Botox appointment because she’s made 4 hour long appearances in a week, hence we are seeing the result of her natural face?

And does this woman own any piece of jewelry that aren’t Kikis or that she hasn’t leached off of the BRF?

    • Snowflake
      November 13, 2017 at 2:49 am (1 week ago)

I had mentioned on an article/post on this site wherein I stated that it’s easy to detect that kaity and people in general who fall into the nouveau riche category because they don’t own/wear jewelry that’s been passed on by their ancestors. Hence, Waity’s purchase of the Kikis and/or borrowing jewelry from the Queen’s collection. I also read an article that thus far, kate has purchased over 650K pounds worth of jewelry since marrying William. If I were in her situation I’d be embarrassed, especially concerning the borrowing of jewelry. What is more blatant that kaity was not from an aristocratic background, she had to borrow a tiara from the Queen on her wedding day, whereas, Diana being an aristocrat. Diana wore the Spencer tiara –which aptly shows a huge difference in their backgrounds. In fact, more telling is that the Middleton women do not seem to have much jewelry of their own. It amazes me how kate never misses an opportunity to showcase Diana’s sapphire ring. I suppose Pippa will soon follow suit and start purchasing her own jewelry now that she’s married to a rich man. That entire family, the Midds, is all about money, and so very shallow.

I don’t have a problem with Kate buying new jewelry, we all aren’t lucky enough to inherit beautiful gems. What I have problems with is her poor taste in jewelry!! =) Cartier makes beautiful pieces and she gets the ugliest ones available! =( all her Kiki’s look almost identical, I’m starting to think her family must own a stake in the company! I could maybe get behind one or two pieces but if she has enough that KMR can do a whole post on them maybe it’s a wee bit too much.
I get we all have different taste and clearly she and I do but her love of all things Kiki is a bit OTT. Go buy some Graffs or van cleef to change things up
