Royal Rewind: Princess Madeleine at the Nobel Prize Ceremony

Royal Rewind: Princess Madeleine at the Nobel Prize Ceremony

Princess Madeleine is scheduled to attend this year’s Nobel Prize Ceremony and banquet on December 10. So as we look forward to that, I thought I’d do a Royal Rewind to look back at Princess Madeleine’s previous appearances at the Nobel Prize Ceremony and banquet.

2000

Madeleine’s first appearance at the Nobel Ceremony and banquet in 2000 saw her wear a simple strapless champagne-colored gown paired with her 18th Birthday Aquamarine Tiara, the drops from the Connaught Tiara worn as a necklace, diamond stud earrings, a diamond bow brooch, and the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King. Simple.

2002

For her second Nobel appearance in 2002, Madeleine kicked it up several notches. Madeleine’s red gown with floral appliqué from 2002 caused people to clutch their pearls due to some photos which showed her cleavage. Swedish fashion designer Camilla Thulin proclaimed of Madeleine in this dress: “She looks like a good-looking Baywatch chick.” Despite the controversy over the dress, Madeleine repeated it to the 2005 Official Dinner.

Madeleine upgraded in the tiara department from her previous appearance at the Nobels, opting for the Modern Fringe Tiara. Madeleine also wore a pearl choker, pearl earrings, a pearl bracelet, and the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King.

2003

2003 brought a stark contrast from the 2002 dress. Madeleine wore a long-sleeved gold gown that offered full coverage over the bust. Madeleine wore the Modern Fringe Tiara again along with pearl earrings and the pearl choker from 2002, and of course the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King.

2005

Madeleine wore a grey/silver lace gown in 2005 paired with the Modern Fringe Tiara, diamond earrings, and the drops from the Connaught Tiara worn as a necklace. She wore the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King as always.

2006

For the 2006 Nobel ceremony and banquet, Madeleine wore a blue chiffon gown with a black overlay and a sweetheart neckline with cap sleeves. Madeleine chose her go-to tiara – Modern Fringe Tiara – and wore the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King. Madeleine also wore a diamond brooch and the Processional Jewels.

The Processional Jewels or Processional Necklace is made of gold, diamonds, pearls, and Ceylon sapphires and was a gift to Victoria of Baden after her 1881 wedding to Crown Prince Gustaf of Sweden. The couple were married in Germany, and Victoria was given this necklace to wear on her procession into Stockholm.

2007

In 2007, Madeleine wore a one-shoulder Linda Nurk gown in Bordeaux red velvet. Madeleine wore the Modern Fringe Tiara and Poire pearl earrings, and the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King.

2008

In 2008, Madeleine wore a pink taffeta gown with brown organza and chiffon, and a pink bolero designed by Lars Wallin. The Modern Fringe Tiara made another appearance, and she wore pearl earrings and the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King.

2009

2009 was an interesting year: Saloon girl chic? Madeleine wore a strapless green duchesse satin dress with black lace on the top of the bodice and in stripes on the skirt by Linda Nurk. Double the tiara appearance, though! She wore the Four Button Tiara on her head and the Modern Fringe Tiara as a necklace. She also wore diamond earrings and a diamond brooch along with the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King.

2012

2012 saw Madeleine return to the Nobels after missing the previous two years. She wore a strapless Angel Sanchez gown in a light gray tulle with silver threads which Madeleine previously wore to Victoria’s pre-wedding festivities. Madeleine wore my all time favorite tiara: The Swedish Amethyst Tiara. Madeleine completed the look with the earrings and two bracelets from the Amethyst Parure, as well as the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King.

This look is my second favorite Nobel look from Madeleine.

2014

Princess Madeleine Nobel Prize Banquet 3

The 2014 Nobel ceremony and banquet brought Madeleine back after a year’s absence. Madeleine chose a Fadi El Khoury gown built on layers of silk organza and Italian tulle in shades of greige rosé, and hand embroidered with glass beads dyed in shades of taupe and burgundy.

Madeleine wore the Modern Fringe Tiara with the brooch and earrings from the Amethyst Parure. She also wore the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King.

Princess Madeleine Nobel Prize Banquet

2015

To the 2015 Ceremony and banquet, Madeleine wore a stunning grey, embellished Fadi El Khoury gown with long, unlined sleeves and buttons on the bodice. She paired the gown with the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara and diamond floral earrings. As always, Madeleine wore the Sash and Star of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden) and the Portrait of the King.

This is my favorite Nobel look from Madeleine.

Madeleine re-wore this dress and tiara to the children’s tea party organized by Min Stora Dag on February 22, 2016.

Madeleine’s Nobel Tiara Scoreboard:

  • 18th Birthday Aquamarine Tiara (1): 2000
  • Modern Fringe Tiara (7): 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2014
  • Four Button Tiara (1): 2009
  • Swedish Amethyst Tiara (1): 2012
  • Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara (1): 2015

Madeleine also wore the Connaught Tiara drops as a neckline twice and the Modern Fringe Tiara as a necklace once.

  1. That last look, she looks stunning!!! Haven’t seen that tiara much before at all. She seems to definitely love that fringe one but I think she can pull it off.

  2. Thank you, KMR! You do such a terrific job of this research and your descriptions and interpretations are always so spot-on. I love the Swedish royal siblings. And my goodness isn’t Madeleine stunning (almost as good looking as Carl-Philip!).

  3. As much as I liked her 2015 appearance my all time favourite (till now) is her look in 2007. The red velvet gown was just stunning.

    1. I agree that the 2007 gown is great, but what makes 2015 my winner is how the make up, tiara, and gown all coordinated amazingly and looked so great with her eyes and coloring.

      She is always beautiful though!

  4. I love her 2014 look. I think she was pregnant for Nicolas (or am I getting my timeline confused?).

Madde just seems to get more beautiful and womanly as she gets older (as long as she lays off the tanning!). Also, I think she is happy in her life, married to Chris with the two kids. She gives off a confident and content vibe to me.

    1. She was about 3 months along with Nicholas at that point (born 15 June 2015). I liked the 2014 look, but thought it didn’t fit properly. Two weeks after the ceremony, they announced she was expecting. Then I figured it had been made loose deliberately because she didn’t know what size she would be at the Nobels. That plus the busy pattern distracted the eyes from noticing a pregnancy tummy.

  5. I like Maddie with blond tones in hair – but not the bleached look of earlier years – she is stunning but most important she glows from inside as well.

  6. I am in tiara heaven. My favorites are the Modern Fringe and Swedish Amethyst. They look magnificent. The 18th reminds me of a third eye. It was nice to see Madde’s transformation very the years.

Thank you, KMR, for a glittering roundup on a dreary morning.

    1. Maddie gets more lovely with each year. I think she is such a Princess! Really!
I love the white dress from 2012. Love the red velvet, too. Just did not like all the black trim. As for the tiaras, she can rock them!!

Her eyes are so beautiful — color wise and are they ever expressive.
She does appear to be very happily married. She and Chris really are great parents to those two cute children!

Thanks for the retrospective, KMR. Still don’t recall hearing if Bob Dylan has acknowledged his Prize. Will he be there? For the life of me, I cannot see how he was honored in this way. But, that’s just my thought.

Wishing everyone a great day. Sorry, it is dreary where you are, rhiannon. Just too pretty for words here on Long Island. And, my little Madeleine wants to go out Now, so bye for now.

        1. This was great with fabulous gowns and tiaras.

Totally off topic, and late but I finally watched The Crown. Thanks to all who warned about historical inaccuracies. I don’t mind artistic license snd imagined conversations, but jumbled facts are annoying. I think the only good parts were the political parts. It slowed down whenever it focused on the Queen because she really didn’t do much. I have always thought that Tommy Lascelles was a nasty man and Prince Philip an angry man.

          1. I think for men of a certain generation (Philip and the Danish consort)and even ethnicity have a hard time answering to/following behind a woman.
            (And even essentially doing nothing)
I will say I think Philip has gotten better in that regard with age and is actually funny/sweet when he’s with a kid and says i know you want to see the queen and then lifts them to her.
The women marrying in have it easier becuase of little girls love the Disney fairy tale princess story. Plus as adults(me) we can get excited about jewels I can only visit in a museum. So there is built in goodwill. Men of Philips generation were taught the men are bread winners/man of the house narrative and I think harder to adapt.

          2. I finally watched it too, and was miffed at how much contact the Duke of Windsor had with the BRF post abdication crisis. The Queen asked for his advice several times in the show. I doubt that happened.

  7. Thanks for this fun post, KMR! I always look forward to the Nobel Ceremony and the tiaras and big jewels it brings out. I hope this year we will see Sophia in a tiara other than her wedding tiara. I am not a fan of the way the wedding tiara sits plopped on top of her head. Hoping she can find something more flattering!

Maddie, Victoria, and Silvia always knock my socks off at this event.

  8. Spectacular Post, KMR. Thank you for a look back at Princess Madeleine in all her gowns and tiaras! She really is stunning. More so today, than when she was younger., imo.

I love the one shoulder looks, too. And, that Aquamarine Tiara sends me! Just heavenly.

Maddie carries herself with such grace and charm. She has such a warm and positive demeanor, too.

Eager to see how all the Swedish Royal women look at the upcoming event. They never seem to disappoint, do they?

  9. Madeleine is such a beautiful woman! She is definitely getting better with age too! Last year’s look was divine and probably my favorite as well. I’ve always been partial to the 2006 appearance because I think her hair and makeup there is flawless.

I always enjoy the SRF at formal occasions. They all know how to rock a tiara.

  10. Madde’s style evolution was fun to see. I say she finally found a great color for her hair and love some of the later gowns. I agree with your favorites KMR. I also liked the one shoulder red velvet.
The blue, pink taffeta and green are least favs.
I love the amythest and aquamarine tiara =)
    Thanks for the fun post

  11. She is a beautiful young woman with great style, and even better jewels. But her weight certainly fluctuated a lot in those photos. Maybe pregnancy for some of them. Interesting how some women, when thrust into the spotlight, become super slender. I guess I’m envious.

    1. Maddie was pregnant with Nicolas in 2014 at the Nobels. But she did not attend in 2013 when pregnant with Leonore. So only pregnant in one of these photos.

    2. I know Victoria had problems with eating disorders and was very public about getting help to overcome them. I’m not sure about Madde, but I can imagine the pressure on her. It seems like both are healthy now and are doing well.

    3. I didn’t see the option to comment above on the Crown thread, so I thought I’d pop it here. In one of the interviews I saw with the creator, he talked about using the Duke as a device in the episode in which she has to decide whether to approve Princess Margaret’s marriage appeal. I wish they could have added notes about when they shifted things around for production sake versus historical accuracy because there were things that he *had* sourced that were accurate that were surprising.

Anyway, thought you might appreciate hearing about that detail.

  12. I love the ensemble from 2012 best, and in the first picture I almost couldn’t tell if it was Madde or a young Victoria. I wouldn’t say they look alike now, but back then- wow!

  13. KMR, Princess Claire of Luxembourg recently had a son! The father Prince Felix is 2nd in line of succession to the throne. Claire & Felix 1st child is a girl. Sorry for changing the subject & please post on this event. Thanks!

  14. I think this collection from KMR highlights that when Maddie gets it right, she gets it really right. When she gets it wrong, she gets it really wrong. 2008 and 2009 are particularly bad. 2008 would be much better without the bolero; at least it is an interesting combination of colors and textures. No words for her green saloon girl outfit from 2009.

    1. I always feel a little bad when it’s a total “miss” from our perspective. Did they get bad advice? Were they trying something new? And so much is individual taste. There are years that other readers have identified as their favorites and I’ve thought, “Really? Of all the years THAT was your favorite?”
